The Atlantic

Design

In 2020, The Atlantic published Shadowland, a project illuminating the rise of mainstream conspiracism in the United States and the systems built to stoke and profit from this paranoid. As part of this project, I designed illustrations for the essay Birtherism of a Nation by Adam Sewer. The essay explains how Birtherism, particularly of Obama by Trump, is not an ordinary conspiracy theory, but one of oppression and racism. My illustrations were inspired by depictions of conspiracy theories in popular culture and reference photos of historic Black life in the US. Read the full essay here.
