Chinwe Gothic

Typography

Chinwe Gothic is a custom sans serif font created in 2019. As an ode to medieval black-letter scripts, I hand drew each alphanumeric character, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers 1-0, and a subset of standard punctuation. In Adobe Illustrator, I refined the letterforms of the drawings, accounting for the baseline, x-height, height, and cap of each character. I compressed the letterforms into a .ttf file for everyday use on word processing programs. Inspired by the use of gothic fonts in official, stately documents and in historic monuments, I created this typeface as an effort to reclaim this resoluteness for shaping my own narratives.
